Old Anambra State gov, Akonobi reveals how Buhari saved him from drowning at NDA training

ONITSHA – GOVERNOR of old Anambra State, Col. Robert Akonobi (rtd), has revealed how the President- elect, General Muhammadu Buhari saved him from drowning while training at the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, in 1962. Akaobi who spoke at Nnewi said, “Buhari was my course mate in the military and we were together in the present NDA, Kaduna.

During one of our trainings in 1962, Buhari helped me to swim across a river. Buhari is a kind hearted man. He knew how to swim but I did not know. Ordinarily, Buhari would have said that I was on my own and allow me to get drowned in the river or fail my training examinations because that was the two options left for me then. But he did not.

‘’He helped me to swim across the river and I did not drown, neither did I fail in my training examinations. “Buhari calls me Bob. With Buhari at the helm of affairs, all we need is to have some measures of control and Nigeria will get back to the right track. During his brief stay in 1983, everybody saw how Nigerian became a disciplined and incorruptible nation through his War Against Indiscipline and Corruption, WAIC and we were almost back to the economic track before he left office prematurely.
