HON. SOLA GIWA: OJUELEGBA CONTAINER INCIDENT – ONE ACCIDENT TOO MANY

I learnt with sadness the unfortunate accident involving a truck in which three passengers lost their lives on Wednesday, September 2, 2015.

I understand that a cement-laden container fell off the Ojuelegba Bridge crushing to death the occupants of a sport utility vehicle.

This is tragic. Not only for the victims and their families. But also for all Lagosians. I commiserate with the families of the innocent passengers who lost their lives in the incident.  

I believe that this is a wake-up call for our law enforcement agencies to ensure that the provisions of Lagos State Road Traffic Law are fully implemented to the letters.

Section 2 of the said Law clearly prohibits movement of trailers and trucks within the metropolis of Lagos between 6am and 9pm. Had the law been enforced, the accident which occurred, from reports, around noon could have been avoided.

Whilst we recognize the rights of owners and drivers of trucks to do their business, this must not be done at the expense of the lives and properties of other citizens who also have equal rights to earn their own living in peace and security. Whilst I am praying for the repose of the soul of the dead, and for fortitude for their families and friends, I hereby call on all stakeholders to rise to the challenge of combating the menace constituted by truck drivers in the State. This is one accident too many.
