The Powerball jackpot has officially swelled to $900 million, causing parts of the United States to go into a ticket-buying mania ahead of Saturday night’s drawing.
In Iowa, people were buying so many tickets on Friday that some stores were running out of paper, the Associated Press reported.
In Virginia, local lottery officials said they expected to sell $21,600 worth of Powerball tickets per minute through Saturday, according to the Washington Post.
A seller in Nashville, Tennessee said so many new buyers had come into her store, purchasing anywhere from $160 to $200 worth of tickets in some cases, that she had to actually teach them how to properly fill out tickets. She added that the madness over the jackpot has made her want to quit her job.
Meanwhile, would-be winners are already planning what they’d do with their cash prize, now a $558 million lump sum before taxes.
A man in Nevada caught the attention of news outlets across the country when he pledged to spend his potential lottery winnings on a “bunch of hookers and cocaine.”
